Day 1: We landed in Tirana in the evening, picked up our rental car, and drove to Vlore for the night.

Day 2: We visited the serene Zvernec Island in the morning, then took a scenic drive to Sarande, where we spent the night.

Day 3: We explored the mesmerizing Blue Eye and travelled to Berat, stopping at the historic town of Gjirokaster on the way.

Day 4: From Berat, we drove to the coastal city of Durres, enjoying its mix of ancient history and modern attractions.

Day 5: We journeyed from Durres to Shkoder, with a memorable boat ride on Lake Koman.

Day 6: We spent the morning in Shkoder, soaking in its vibrant culture and history, before returning to Tirana in the afternoon.

Day 7: We spent our second to last day exploring the peaceful bovila lake and the park that surrounds it in Tirana. The quiet setting offered a perfect contrast to the bustling city, providing a relaxing end to our journey.

Day 8: With hearts full of memories and a camera full of photos, we bid farewell to Albania and headed back home, already dreaming of our next adventure.

Throughout our trip, we were met with the genuine kindness of the Albanian people, finding the country incredibly safe and family-friendly. Albania’s vibrant cities, tranquil beaches, crystal-clear water and majestic mountains offer something for everyone, making it a perfect travel destination.

When planning a trip to a new destination, safety is often a primary concern. Albania, a hidden gem in the Balkans, is no exception. Based on our recent 8-day road trip through this captivating country, Here’s an up-to-date overview of the current safety situation in Albania.

Albania is a safe and wonderful destination for any traveller.

Tourists’ General Safety in Albania

Over the past few years, the country has seen significant improvements in infrastructure, tourism services, and public safety. The crime rate is relatively low compared to many other European countries, particularly in tourist areas. We found the local people incredibly hospitable, often going out of their way to assist travelers.

While violent crime is rare, petty crimes such as pickpocketing and bag snatching can occur, especially in crowded places like markets and public transportation hubs. During our trip, we took standard precautions such as keeping our belongings secure and staying aware of our surroundings, and we encountered no issues.

When travelling to a foreign country, it’s important to be aware of safety concerns. Be mindful of your surroundings, take basic safety measures, and stay in popular tourist areas. If you use common sense and follow local travel guidelines, Albania is generally a safe place to visit.

Health and Hygiene Safety in Albania

Drink Bottled Water

It is advisable to drink bottled water to avoid any potential stomach issues, as tap water quality can vary.

Food Safety

Enjoy local cuisine, but make sure to eat at reputable restaurants or food stalls where food is freshly prepared and served hot.

Medicines

We brought some general medicines with us, including Paracetamol and gastritis medicines. This is especially helpful if you have specific health needs or are concerned about availability.

Healthcare facilities in major cities like Tirana, Durres, and Vlore are good. Pharmacies are widely available, and many pharmacists speak English.

We had no health issues during our stay but made sure to have all recommended vaccinations before our trip.

Transportation Safety in Albania

Rent a car in Albania

If you plan to rent a car, choose a reputable rental company. Ensure the vehicle is in good condition, and you have comprehensive insurance.

Bus service in Albania

Honestly, we couldn’t get any experience with public transport. We got these pieces of information on public transport when researching Albania.

Intercity Buses

Main cities such as Tirana, Durres, and Vlore are well-connected by intercity buses, providing comfortable and reasonably priced transportation options.

Minibuses

Outside of Tirana, minibuses, known as furgons, are the most common mode of transport. During our trip, we noticed that while Tirana had many buses, other cities primarily relied on furgons for public transport.

Furgons are convenient, but they can be crowded and may lack seat belts. Always check the condition of the vehicle and ensure your belongings are secure.

Tickets can be purchased at bus stations or sometimes directly from the driver.

Taxis

Taxis are readily available in major cities and tourist areas. It is better to use licenced taxis to ensure safety and fair pricing. Agree on a fare before starting your journey or ensure the meter is running. In some areas, fares can be negotiated.

Trains

Albania’s railway network is limited and primarily used for freight. Passenger trains operate on a few routes but are often slow and less reliable compared to buses and furgons.

Driving in Albania can be challenging due to varying road conditions and driving habits. However, with cautious driving and a reliable GPS, we navigated the roads without any major problems. Scenic routes, especially along the coast, were well worth the effort.

• Local driving in Albania can be challenging, with frequent lane changes, limited use of indicators, and a general disregard for speed limits, especially in urban areas.
• Main roads and highways connecting major cities are generally in good condition and well-maintained. However, rural roads can be less reliable, with potholes, narrow lanes, and occasional unpaved sections.
• Traffic congestion can be significant in larger cities like Tirana and Durres, especially during rush hours. Patience and alertness are essential when driving in these areas.
• Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers. Ensure children are properly secured in appropriate car seats.

Albania offers beautiful scenic drives, such as the coastal road from Vlore to Sarande and mountain view Shkoder to Theth. These routes provide breathtaking views but can be winding and challenging, so drive carefully. Mountain roads can be narrow and steep. Exercise caution, especially during adverse weather conditions.
