Entry is free and there is ample free parking spaces.

  • Church Open Hours: 7.45 am – 8.20 pm (7.00 pm on Saturday)
  • Garden Open Hours: 10 am – 4.30 pm daily

Dogs permitted?

Well-behaved dogs are permitted to enter the gardens but only registered assistant dogs can enter the buildings.

History

The first monastery at Buckfast was founded during the reign of King Cnut in 1018 and was Benedictine. After joining Cistercian Order In 1147, the whole monastery was rebuilt with stone in the Cistercian pattern.

Things to do

    • Grass Land

There is a large grassed area and the ability to walk freely on the grass. The amazing thing is “Please do walk on grass” put on grass. And many picnic tables are available.

    • Gardens

In the gardens, lavender and many varieties of blooming colourful plants are highlighted most in summer. One garden contains Herbal, poisoned, spice plants.

    • Abbay Church:

Inside and outside of the church are glamorous and full of pride. The most amazing place is the impressive floor-to-ceiling stained glass window of Christ.

    • Shop:

The Abbey’s shops are famous for honey and also offer a wide variety of unique gifts, cards, books, as well as food and beverages. Additionally, you can find delectable Buckfast Abbey fudge, meticulously handmade in the monastery’s kitchens

    • Restaurant:

The Grange Restaurant offers a range of delicious hot dishes, lighter bites also available including pasties, sausage rolls, soup, sandwiches, salads, and paninis at reasonable prices.

    • The Water Mill:

The Buckfast has a working waterwheel and is powered by water from the river Dart. It generates 6-8kW.
